Gum Disease
Gum disease is a common problem which, when left untreated, can leave permanent damage. We understand gum disease and know how to treat it to stop damage before it's too late.
What causes Gum Disease?
Gum disease is caused by bacteria in our mouth. When they collect where the tooth and gum meet it turns into plaque. This triggers an immune response which our body doesn’t know when to shut off.
Our immune system starts affecting the bone that supports our teeth, resulting in a weakening in our gums. This leads to the development of “pockets” where the top of the gum and bone are separated by more than 3mm; when these get to more than 5mm, the bacteria change and become more aggressive leading to a more rapid progression of the disease.
How the Hygienist can Help...
At Serenity Dental, we take gum disease very seriously. There are different degrees of gum disease, with most of us suffering from some form at a stage in our lives.
However, just a trip to the hygienist paired with some good home care and patients can quickly put patients back on track.
How can it be Treated?
To treat gum disease, we need to control the immune response and maintain a very high level of mouth hygiene. Using the latest in Waterlase laser technology, we’ll clean pockets in your gums to free them from aggressive bacteria, to encourage healing and potentially reverse the damage.
There is also a known link between gum health and general health. We can assess how your gums are likely affecting your heart, blood vessels, risk of diabetes or stroke, and other significant common disease processes.
Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any problems.
